SDG 11.2.5

SDG 11.2.5 Arts and heritage contribution

To bring the arts to the local community, NCUE offers free music events, arts lectures and exhibitions every year. These activities attract students to join clubs and invite community members to take part, serving faculty, students and local audiences and widening participation in the arts.

1. Student clubs

(1) The Baisha Wind Band and the C-Major Choir are formed by students with an interest in music. Besides providing teaching and exchange opportunities, both are regularly invited to perform elsewhere or participate in exchanges with other institutions, and they have won awards in national competitions. Both play a central role in NCUE’s major campus events. As part of inter-university exchanges, the KuDance Hip-Hop Club staged an end-of-semester showcase on campus featuring diverse dance styles and current popular dance music. The event gave students opportunities to release stress and express their emotions, while attracting more students interested in physical activity to join the club. Other student clubs also gave distinctive performances that animated campus life. Public performances by student clubs are listed in Table 1 and shown in Figures 1–11.

2. Indigenous Market Music Festival: Public Performances

On October 23, 2025, NCUE held the “Indigenous Market Music Festival” as part of its 54th anniversary celebrations, open free of charge to faculty, students and local residents. The festival promoted Indigenous arts and culture through music and dance performances and an Indigenous market. Performing groups included the Caterpillar Choir of Pinghe Elementary School, Changhua County, NCUE’s IVALA Indigenous student group, the Wild Wind Indigenous Club of Chaoyang University of Technology, the Indigenous Culture Promotion Club of Hungkuang University, and the Native Voice Club of Da-Yeh University. Singing in Indigenous languages, traditional music and dance, and cultural performances broadened public participation in the arts and demonstrated the University’s contribution to promoting and transmitting local arts and culture.

4. Department of English - English Drama

The Department of English uses this public production to apply what students have learned in its English listening and speaking and drama courses to the stage, so that specialist subject knowledge reaches a general audience. The production is also intended to encourage English learning at NCUE and across central Taiwan, support cultural exchange between the University and neighboring communities, and foster an appreciation of literature and the arts (Figures 27–28).

5. Graduate Institute of Technology and Adolescent English (GITAE): Drama Production

GITAE’s annual drama production is linked to its course on children’s and adolescent literature in English. Performed entirely in English, it shows how students apply literary interpretation, language proficiency and dramatic invention in practice. Through text analysis, script adaptation, characterization and stage design, students develop interdisciplinary and performance skills. Each year’s production is created for the children of NCUE’s affiliated kindergarten, introducing them to English, literature and the performing arts and proving opportunities for cultural participation and experience (Figures 31–32). The production gives students a stage for their learning, connects the University with local education.

7. International and local artistic exchange: outcomes of the 2025 “NCUE x SUP” Taiwan–UK artist exchange and public exhibitions

NCUE actively promotes the preservation and innovation of artistic heritage. Building on the "Something Useful Project (SUP)" cooperation agreement signed with the UK art organization The Muse in 2024, the university implemented a series of public events in 2025 aimed at strengthening the local art community and deepening international dialogue:

(1) International Artist Residency and Local Community Engagement:
From March to May 2025, NCUE successfully hosted two UK artists, Danny Young and Margarita Frančeska Loze, in residence. During their stay, multiple art workshops, lectures, and educational forums were held for faculty, students, and the local Changhua community (as shown in Figure 36). The resident artists guided students and local residents to re-examine everyday living spaces from an international perspective, putting into practice the vision of democratizing art.

(2) Annual Public Exhibition: Round Table: Encounter and Co-Construction:
The project held its annual public exhibition at the Changhua Arts Hall from May 22 to June 8, 2025 (Figure 37). Built on the concept of the round table and Taiwan’s pān-toh (outdoor banquet) culture, the exhibition expressed the spirit of cross-cultural co-creation. The artists in residence exhibited diverse works alongside nine NCUE students and alumni, bringing an international artistic experience to the local community in Changhua.

(3) Faculty and Student International Touring Exhibitions in the UK:
Continuing the project's momentum, from July 28 to August 3, 2025, a Department of Fine Arts faculty member led three outstanding students (fully sponsored by SUP) to Manchester and London, UK, for the second phase of exchange. The trip included a visit to the Liverpool Biennial, as well as two annual public joint exhibitions held at the Adelphi Arts Building at the University of Salford and the XYZ Alternative Art Space in London, presenting the fruitful results of the Taiwan-UK art exchange to an international audience (as shown in Figures 38–40).

(4) Sustained Operation and Innovation in Cultural Heritage:
The project is supported by units inside and outside the University and by the Changhua City Government, and links the artist-in-residence scheme with academic research and local culture. Through regular and ongoing public exhibitions, NCUE has strengthened students’ ability to work in international settings and supported the longer-term development of Changhua’s arts community. These efforts demonstrate the University’s social responsibility in contributing to artistic heritage.

8. Local Arts Education and Community Art Participation

(1) Since 1995, NCUE's College of Extension Education has organized the Changhua County Evergreen University, continuing to provide arts learning and participation opportunities for community members aged 55 and above. The Evergreen University offers two terms per year, each lasting 16 weeks. To promote the integration of art into daily life, each term offers art-related courses such as Chinese ink and color painting, calligraphy, fine arts, and calligraphic art classes (Figures 43–44), incorporating local elements into the creative process. Through art, participants cultivate the mind while contributing to the preservation of local art, promoting the learning, transmission, and practical application of local art and culture in daily life. In 2025, the Evergreen University offered a total of 10 art-related classes, with 343 course completions in total.

(2) In addition, NCUE continues to offer a diverse range of art courses through its extension education programs, providing community members with opportunities to create and experience art. In 2025, a total of 10 art-related courses were offered (Table 4 and Figures 45–46), with 125 total enrollments in total, covering areas such as art therapy, traditional crafts, and artistic creation.

(3) Through long-term community art education and diverse art activities, NCUE continues to expand opportunities for local residents to participate in the arts, using university resources to support the promotion and development of local arts and culture.

9. Local Art

Centered on the "Huangxi Aesthetics in Action: Changhua Xiaoxi Lane Project," NCUE combines its expertise in fine arts, local cultural resources, and community participation to bring artistic creation into the historic Xiaoxi Lane district of Changhua. Through public art, streetscape aesthetics, and cultural performances, the project promotes the preservation, translation, and reinterpretation of local cultural value.

The project has completed seven works integrating art into local spaces and one work related to cultural heritage transmission. Among these, "Reflections of Xiaoxi" incorporates the distinctive scenery of Xiaoxi Lane and community memory into a piece of public art (Figure 47), allowing local historical memory to be understood and represented in a way that is more accessible to the public.

"Xiaoxi Color Project 2.0" builds on existing streetscape mural achievements (Figure 48), improving the visual quality of the district through the planned use of color and carrying forward the local cultural atmosphere and imagery.

In addition, through the Street Corner Gallery (Figure 49), cultural walking tours, outcome exhibitions, and a creative process involving joint participation by students and residents, the project has built connections between art, residents, and local culture, making art not only a means of displaying outcomes but also an important medium for revitalizing the historic district and conveying local culture.
