SDG 15.2.1 Events about sustainable use of land

In addition to the sustainable use of land, the University has implemented several other projects and activities, including the Department of Geography’s “Changhua County Landscape Conservation Promotion Program” and the Department of Fine Arts’ “Ecological Healing and Green Sustainability: Changhua Ecological Art Project.” These projects are briefly summarized in Table 1 below, followed by individual introductions.

The NCUE’s related interventions included:

1. Changhua County Landscape Conservation Promotion Program

This project is funded by the Changhua County Government and implemented by the University under the guidance of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency. Using a phased, area-based approach, the project identifies and inventories potential sites in the Baguashan area that possess significant value as natural landscapes and natural monuments, while also organizing public outreach and educational activities on landscape conservation.

In 2025, the survey focused on the southern section of Baguashan, covering Shetou Township, Tianzhong Township, and Ershui Township. Through a combination of literature review and field surveys, the project completed the inventory and documentation of 10 potential landscape sites. These include the Longzaitou Mountain Badlands, the Baguashan Southern Foothills Badlands, the Songbaikeng Gravel Layer, the Toutiaokeng Collapse Cliffs and Debris-Flow Gullies, Eighteen Bends Alluvial Fans, and the Tianzhong and Puzhong Blade-like Ridgelines. Landscape inventory record forms were also developed to serve as a reference for government authorities in development review, environmental education, and conservation management. Among the 350 landscape sites currently registered nationwide, only two are located in Changhua County.

In terms of public outreach, four activities were held, with a total of 47 participant attendances. All activities took place at Shengyang Hall of National Changhua University of Education (NCUE). On October 18, two sessions of the “Mineral and Rock-Shaped Soap-Making Workshop” were held, with 10 participants in the morning session and 18 in the afternoon session, for a total of 28 participants. The project leader first introduced the results of the Baguashan landscape inventory and international experiences in landscape art and conservation. A landscape artist then guided participants in using soap bases and mica powder to create realistic replicas of mineral crystal forms.

On October 24, two sessions of “Landscape Planter Making and Stories of Baguashan” were held, with a total of 19 participants. The activities began with an indoor lecture on the geological formation and evolution of Baguashan. Participants were then led to the Baguashan trail behind the campus for field observation of cross-bedding, rain-eroded valleys, imbricate structures, and marine ripple-mark structures. Finally, transparent containers were filled layer by layer with red soil, gravel, and sand to simulate a geological profile of red soil and gravel, and plants were added to the model. Through these hands-on activities, geological knowledge and conservation awareness were brought into everyday life. Relevant photographs are shown in Figure 1.

2. Ecological Healing and Green Sustainability: Changhua Ecological Art Project

In response to the ecological crisis caused by global warming, the University’s Department of Fine Arts proposed the University Social Responsibility (USR) Project, “Ecological Healing and Green Sustainability: Changhua Ecological Art Project,” for implementation from 2025 to 2027. With “local care” as its central theme, the project aims to contribute to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. In 2025, a series of free activities were organized, as listed in Table 1. Relevant photographs are shown in Figures 2–4.
