SDG 3.3.3
SDG 3.3.3 Shared sports facilities
NCUE opens its sports facilities to local residents to encourage recreational exercise while improving the quality of physical education teaching and facility management. By integrating community resources, NCUE promotes sport for all and broadens students' experience. The sports facilities are described below.
1. To improve the sports environment on the Shida Campus, NCUE built a covered all-weather court, aiming to promote a new culture of sports on campus. Construction and acceptance inspection has been completed, and the court is now open for use, providing faculty, staff, and students with a higher-quality, safer space that can be used regardless of weather conditions. (Figure 1)
2. NCUE has both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Outdoor facilities such as the athletics track are free for staff, students and local residents. Residents use the track for exercise each morning and evening, and a community dance group practices at one end of the track in the early evening. Above the tennis courts there are three outdoor basketball courts and two volleyball courts, which draw players in the evenings and at weekends; the high and low bars and the horizontal and parallel bars in the shade nearby are used by older residents for stretching and warming up. Indoor facilities such as the badminton courts and multipurpose court are free for staff and students on application and available to local residents for a fee and can be booked by community or external groups for weekend competitions.
3. The ground floor of the Wang Jin-Ping Activity Center is an open space named Lakeside Plaza because of its position beside Baisha Lake, a landmark on campus. Shaded and spacious, it is regularly used by students and residents for gymnastics, dancing, skipping and other informal exercise. NCUE has also established the U-First Sports Coaching Service Team, which since 2020 has run the University Social Responsibility (USR) Hub project “Changbei LOHAS Muscle Power – Kimochi Exercise Program” and delivers free technology-assisted fitness testing with the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education. The testing is open to NCUE staff and students and to local residents and helps participants understand their physical condition and choose suitable exercise. The program introduces older residents to exercise through simple warm-up routines and encourages them to keep exercising regularly.
4. The swimming pool operates on a paid-entry basis. It is leased to Shin Shang Enterprise Co., Ltd. and is open to staff, students and local residents for a fee. (Figures 2–3)

5. Outdoor facilities on the Shida Campus include volleyball, basketball, tennis and football pitches; indoor facilities include a table tennis room and a weight training room. All outdoor facilities except the tennis courts are free for staff, students and local residents. The football pitch is used at weekends by local softball players, and the basketball and volleyball courts attract younger residents. Many residents also walk the campus paths, which rise and fall across the site, combining light aerobic exercise with time among the trees. The tennis courts and indoor facilities are free for NCUE staff and students on application only. (Figure 5)
