SDG 2.5.1

SDG 2.5.1 Access to food security knowledge

Under the fourth phase of the University Social Responsibility (USR) Project “Resilient Changbin: Sustainability of Changhua's Coastal Environment and Industries under Climate Change” (distinctive-university category, deep-cultivation type), NCUE collaborates on the 2025 Local Marine Conservation Stewardship Project – Changhua Coastal Manila Clam Habitat Survey, Conservation and Restoration Promotional Programme. The implementing body is the Changhua County Marine Food Research Production Cooperative, Ltd. Partner sites include the Xinbao Wetland in Fangyuan Township, coastal aquaculture sites, and Caohu Junior High School, Changhua County.

The project runs free educational activities on aquatic product safety, environmentally friendly aquaculture, aquaculture water-quality monitoring, and marine bacteria testing. Through water analysis, hands-on water testing, culturing and identifying marine bacteria, and wetland shellfish surveys, local residents, aquaculture workers, teachers and students learn how production environments, contamination risk and food safety are connected. Thereby, they build their capacity to identify, monitor and pass on food-safety knowledge.

1. In 2025 the project completed four manila clam habitat surveys and volunteer survey training sessions at the Xinbao Wetland, with 50 participants; three seed-teacher training sessions for marine citizen scientists, with 91 participants; and one junior marine citizen scientist camp, with 27 participants. Courses held at the school on water analysis, marine bacteria testing and hands-on water testing drew 54 participants.

2. On 7 May 2025 the project ran “Wetland Blue Carbon, Friendly Aquaculture and Marine Citizen Scientist Seed Teacher Training”, with 25 participants. The course linked environmentally friendly aquaculture, wetland ecology, and aquatic product safety for seed teachers to take this knowledge back to their communities, schools and local outreach activities (Figure 1).

3. On 8 and 10 May 2025 the project ran practical courses on water quality and food safety at Caohu Junior High School, Changhua County. The 8 May session covered six-in-one water analysis, dissolved-oxygen titration, and use of a dissolved-oxygen meter, with 20 participants; the 10 May session covered marine bacteria testing, spread-plate counting, Gram staining, and hands-on water testing, with 34 participants. The courses helped students understand the links between the aquaculture water environment, microbial risk, and aquatic product safety (Figures 2 and 3).

4. On 2 June 2025 the project ran “Environmentally Friendly Aquatic Products Walking Tour and Survey”, led by Professor Chih-Yang Huang and Mr. Ming-Liao Chen, with 30 participants. Participants visited local aquaculture and aquatic product sites to learn about environmental monitoring, friendly aquaculture management, and aquatic product safety. The project linked classroom knowledge to actual production sites (Figures 4 and 5).
