SDG 2.3.3

SDG 2.3.3 Sustainable food choices on campus

NCUE provides continuous and varied catering to meet the growing demand among students and staff for dietary choice and plans that variety with health in mind.

1. Both campuses have cafeterias offering students and staff a comfortable, clean dining environment. They operate as self-service buffets, with plant-based and meat dishes placed in separate areas, so that non-vegetarians, semi-vegetarians and ovo-lacto vegetarians can each take food that suits their diet. Calorie information is displayed throughout the cafeterias, and meals are affordable.
2. Cafeteria hygiene is managed on several levels and from several angles: self-management, ingredient registration, audits by external health authorities, internal hygiene supervision, oversight by NCUE's Food Management Committee, and the higher-education cafeteria hygiene advisory scheme. Together these give students and staff a comfortable, clean environment and nutritious, hygienic food. The cafeterias serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in a food-court format that includes Chinese buffet dishes, set meals, Western waffles, a fruit and ice-dessert bar and local snacks (Figures 1-3).

3. NCUE's Food Management Committee meets at least twice each academic year and carries out weekly food hygiene and environmental inspections for effective oversight of cafeteria food safety.
4. Advisory visits from the Ministry of Education and from professional associations help the cafeterias provide healthier catering to students and staff. For the varied catering and supervision at the campus cafeterias, see Figure 4.
