SDG17.2.1 Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy-2021

NCUE actively participates in the policies of NGOs and the government to promote sustainable development goals. The teachers directly participate or are involved in the formulation of the government’s policies on sustainable development goals by implementing government or non-government plans and serving as members of relevant departments, as follows.

1. Professor Po-wen Ku of the Graduate Institute of Sports and Health implemented the Ministry of Science and Technology’s ‘Sub-programme 2 of Integrated Research Programme on Adolescents’ Sedentary Behaviours: Follow-up Study on Adolescents’ Sedentary Behaviour and Sleep Quality (1/3)’.

Teenagers spend a lot of time in sedentary positions every day, such as when doing schoolwork and using mobile phones/tablets and computers, which may affect their sleep. Using wearable devices, this research programme measures the daily sedentary behaviours and sleep quality of teenagers, with a follow-up period of three years, and includes 10 weeks of intervention using high tables and chairs (i.e. attending classes in a standing manner). Although the follow-up study is ongoing, it has been found through the intervention with high tables and chairs in the second year that the students in the experimental group have significantly increased their daily moderate- and high-intensity physical activities and reduced their daily sedentary time compared with the students in the general class, even though they only used high tables and chairs for 10 weeks. Please refer to Appendix 17.2.1A for supporting information.

2. Professor Yang-wei Lin of the Department of Chemistry implemented the ‘Research and Development of Innovative Teaching Resources for Precision Medicine Treatment Transformation Sub-programme 3 - Innovative Science Popularization Resources Development and Promotion Plan for Photothermal and Ultrasound-induced Precise Drug Release’ sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

To develop innovative educational resources for forward-looking technology, nanotechnology reports in international journals (including a basic knowledge of nanotechnology, technological development, and its application) were transformed into educational resources (interesting/enlightening/self-made nano experimental teaching materials) that can be understood by the general public, including teachers, students, and parents. These educational resources will help the public understand the impact of this technology on human life and establish the relationship between forward-looking technology and modern society. They can also enhance students’ basic scientific literacy (including scientific spirit and attitude, scientific skills, and scientific knowledge), to help students engage in scientific research in the future. Please refer to Appendix 17.2.1B for supporting information.

7. Professor Po-wen Ku of the Graduate Institute of Sports and Health serves as the director and CEO of the Human Rights Education Foundation.

The Human Rights Education Foundation is committed to promoting healthy human rights. Taking the Offshore Island Communities Health Promotion Programme as an example, it cooperates with medical teams to build a health and human rights education network (http://www.hhre.org.tw/body.html). It has developed a number of online test items suitable for screening in communities, including physical activities, eyesight health, and sleep health. The screening rate for people over 50 years living on offshore islands has reached nearly 100%, truly achieving the purpose of prevention and healthcare. This plan is valuable for improving people’s health and well-being, reducing the health inequality of people in offshore island areas, and increasing their health and human rights. Please refer to Appendices 17.2.1F, 17.2.1G, 17.2.1H, and 17.2.1I and the website of the Human Rights Education Foundation for the list of the board of directors of the foundation: https://href.oddist.org/?page_id=26.
