2. "GatherTown Immersive Experience: Becoming a Sea Turtle Conservationist" Project, sponsored by the Ministry of Education
"GatherTown Immersive Experience: Becoming a Sea Turtle Conservationist" is a project led by Professor Cheng Meng-tzu from the Department of Biology in collaboration with the National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium. This project utilizes the GatherTown platform to create an immersive experience, allowing users to simulate the process of rescuing and successfully releasing stranded sea turtles. The goal is to raise awareness about sea turtle conservation and marine environmental protection.
The platform simulates the behind-the-scenes environment of the marine museum and includes tasks related to sea turtle rescue work. The learning process integrates online resources and physical activity kits to enhance the realism and engagement of the virtual experience. Users are guided to understand the challenges faced by sea turtles through both educational content on turtles and ecology and through emotional education on marine sustainability and environmental literacy.
After development, the "GatherTown Immersive Experience: Becoming a Sea Turtle Conservationist" was showcased at the 2023 Taiwan Science Festival at the National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium in Pingtung. It was also implemented in practical course activities at Donggang High School, Hecuo Elementary School, and the Yuan-Tseh Science Camp in Pingtung.
