SDG14.5.4 Collaboration for shared aquatic ecosystems
NCUE has ongoing projects and activities, which include the ‘Fangyuan Reconstruction USR Seed Type Project’ by the Environmental Education Centre, ‘2020–2022, Delve into Fangyuan, Hand in Hand with Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability in Twin Cities of Changhua’ Project, and ‘Greening and Beautifying Improvements to the River and Water Environment on the Left Bank of the Kamachat River’. Their brief descriptions follow.
1. ‘Fangyuan Reconstruction USR Seed Type Project’ and ‘2020–2022 Delve into Fangyuan, Hand in Hand with Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability in Twin Cities of Changhua Project’
Included service plan: Maintenance is conducted twice a month. Members: 22 teachers and students in NCUE, with technical cooperation from the Fisheries Research Institute and HungKuang University,
monitor and investigate 15 fish farms, four coastal water inlet channels, and groundwater wells of the Changhua County Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Association, providing real-time water quality and bacteria detection, monitoring, and analysis, and give suggestions and improvement strategies to the mariculture farmers of Changhua to maintain the coastal water quality and the health of the aquatic ecosystem, and to ensure the production of safe aquatic food.
‘2020 Delve into Fangyuan, Hand in Hand with Dacheng’: an USR micro film. Through planning, teaching, research, and service, teachers and students in NCUE connect with and promote eco-tourism, mariculture, regional development, and the conservation and maintenance of marine ecosystems among the local Fangyuan community.

3. Related activities held by the Science Education Center
The project for education on water quality, “Science Exploration Activities through Interesting Experiments and Learning Activities for Teachers and Pre-service Teachers at Dapu Junior High and Elementary School of Chiayi County, for the academic year 2021” included experimental teaching activities such as “Is this the water we drink?,” “Treatment of water: The Science Competition,” and “Water Striders: Hydrogen bonding, Surface Tension, and Buoyancy,” which were led by Professor Ling Jiang of NCUE’s Department of Biology, and Professors Hong-Thih Lai and Su-Mei Wu of National Chiayi University.
The “Teacher Study Activity: Outdoor Ecological Exploration of Amorphophallus hirtus on Changhua Shipaikeng Water Trail” offered ecological education on wildlife and aquatic biodiversity. The outdoor teaching activity was led by Professor Jong-Yih Lin of NCUE’s Department of Biology and teacher Jhih-ying LI of Changhua’s Ching Cheng High School, and attended by teachers, students, and pre-service teachers of elementary and secondary school.
To support the policy of encouraging teachers of Chiayi County to participate in empowerment activities and local education guidance, the “Teacher Empowerment Training Activity: Outdoor Teaching of Kinmen Ecology” was co-hosted to introduce the ecology of both wild animals and plants, and aquatic biodiversity. Professors Jong-Yih Lin and Ling Jiang of NCUE’s Department of Biology organized the outdoor teaching activity and introduced horseshoe crabs and blue-tailed bee-eaters to elementary and secondary school teachers.
