SDG14.5.2 Monitoring the health of aquatic ecosystems

NCUE has ongoing projects and activities, including the Environmental Education Center’s ‘2020–2022 Delve into Fangyuan, Hand in Hand with Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability in Twin Cities of Changhua’ Project. The Department of Geography’s “Project for Monitoring Agriculture and Fishery Socio-Ecosystems in the Wetlands Stretches along the West Coast of Taiwan.” What follows is a brief description of the projects.

1. ‘Fangyuan Reconstruction USR Seed Type Project’ and ‘2020–2022 Delve into Fangyuan, Hand in Hand with Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability in Twin Cities of Changhua Project’
Included service plan: Monitoring is conducted twice a month on regular basis. Members: 22 teachers and students in the NCUE, with technical cooperation from the Fisheries Research Institute and HungKuang University
monitor and investigate 15 fish farms, four coastal water inlet channels, and groundwater wells of the Changhua County Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Association, providing real-time water quality and bacteria detection, and also monitoring and analysing the health of the coastal aquatic ecosystems.

2. Monitoring Agricultural and Fishery Socio-Ecosystems in the Wetlands Stretches along the West Coast of Taiwan
Entrusted by the National Science and Technology Council, the Department of Geography organizes the project on “Monitoring Agricultural and Fishery Socio-Ecosystems in the Wetlands Stretches along the West Coast of Taiwan” with Fangyuan as the observation center. A local demonstrative observation study has been established to conduct long-term, basic, and crucial observations of the core items of the socio-ecological system. As a part of a long-term socio-ecological core observation, the project conducts observations in Changhua, and water quality is monitored once a month during environmental and ecological inspections at observation stations in the Yongxing Wang Gong fish farming area. The survey from February to July 2022 has been completed. In addition to continuous monitoring, new points of water quality monitoring will be established at the Erlin Stream, Hougang Stream, and Wanxing Ditch, where automatic water quality monitoring equipment will be placed to conduct round-the-clock monitoring. In-depth interviews are organized with prominent local citizens, as they are an important part of the social and humanistic information of social investigation at the observation stations, and help to expand the local social network platform. Local stakeholders such as government agencies, cultural groups, industrial groups, developers and producers, and other representatives are interviewed. They provide information on different roles, functions, and stakes, and their experience and observation of the complex interplay between the socio-ecological systems. The information is systematically reviewed and collected, and is an important source of socio- ecological data for the LTSER platform.
