SDG14.4.1 Water discharge guidelines and standards

1. Water quality and drainage standards are set for both NCUE campuses; the Environmental Education Center and the Science Education Center organize  related activities.

NCUE has two campuses, in Jin-De and Baoshan, and the procedure is as follows:

1.1 In accordance with the regulations of the Waste Disposal Act, the laboratory waste liquid of the Jin-De campus is supposed to be cleaned and disposed of as industrial waste. Following application, the Environmental Protection Bureau of Changhua County Government approved the cancelation of the water pollution prevention and control permit of the Jin-De campus and removed it from the management list of the government. The original sewage treatment facilities are still in normal operation.
1.2 The Baoshan campus mainly treats general domestic sewage. After the sewage waste is treated by the sewage treatment plants, it is discharged from the discharge outlets reported to the government and managed by NCUE. The water quality inspection and regular reporting are carried out in accordance with the Water Pollution Control Act.

2. The Environmental Education Centre implements the “Program for Engaging Fangyuan and Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability for Changhua’s Twin Towns in 2020–2022”
Aquaculture production of Asian hard clams is environmentally friendly as carbon dioxide is absorbed in the process, thus curbing greenhouse gases and carbon emissions. Polyculture based on ecosystem functions can reduce the use of baits, save water, and decrease waste. Risks can be lowered, and quality and quantity can be improved with the use of intelligent aquaculture, such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data analytics. New technologies form the core of the project, which helps implement innovative teaching that combines research courses, and teacher-student learning services, together with in-depth development and operation of aquaculture tourism in the fishing village to create and exploit new values of urban and rural development for both NCUE and the local industries.

NCUE’s teachers and students partnered with members of local groups to conduct a survey on the ecosystem and organisms in the coastal wetlands to establish a marine ecological database and monitor information related to economic fishery resources.

The project for education on water quality, “Science Exploration Activities through Interesting Experiments and Learning Activities for Teachers and Pre-service Teachers at Dapu Junior High and Elementary School of Chiayi County, 2021 academic year” included experimental teaching activities such as, “Is this the water we drink?,” “Treatment of water: Science Competition,” and “Water Striders: Hydrogen bonding, Surface Tension, and Buoyancy,” which were spearheaded by Professor Ling Jiang of NCUE’s Department of Biology, and Professors Hong-Thih Lai and Su-Mei Wu of National Chiayi University.

“Teacher Study Activity: Outdoor Ecological Exploration of Amorphophallus hirtus on Changhua Shipaikeng Water Trail”“Teacher Study Activity: Outdoor Ecological Exploration of Amorphophallus hirtus on Changhua Shipaikeng Water Trail”“Teacher Study Activity: Outdoor Ecological Exploration of Amorphophallus hirtus on Changhua Shipaikeng Water Trail”
“Teacher Study Activity: Outdoor Ecological Exploration of Amorphophallus hirtus on Changhua Shipaikeng Water Trail” offered ecological education on wildlife and aquatic biodiversity. The outdoor teaching activity was led by Professor Jong-Yih Lin of NCUE’s Department of Biology and teacher Jhih-ying Li of Changhua’s Ching Cheng High School, and attended by teachers, students, and pre-service teachers of elementary and secondary schools.

“Teacher Empowerment Training Activity: Outdoor Teaching of Kinmen Ecology”“Teacher Empowerment Training Activity: Outdoor Teaching of Kinmen Ecology”“Teacher Empowerment Training Activity: Outdoor Teaching of Kinmen Ecology”“Teacher Empowerment Training Activity: Outdoor Teaching of Kinmen Ecology”
To support the policy of encouraging teachers of Chiayi County to participate in empowerment activities and local education guidance, the “Teacher Empowerment Training Activity: Outdoor Teaching of Kinmen Ecology” was co-hosted to introduce the ecology of both wild animals and plants, and aquatic biodiversity. Professors Jong-Yih Lin and Ling Jiang of NCUE’s Department of Biology organized the outdoor teaching activity and introduced horseshoe crabs and blue-tailed bee-eaters to elementary and secondary school teachers.
