SDG14.3.3 Maintain ecosystems and their biodiversity(direct work)-2021
NCUE has at least four planned activities to maintain and expand existing plant and animal ecosystems and their biodiversity, especially threatened ecosystems. They include the Environmental Education Centre’s ‘Fangyuan Reengineering USR Seed Programme’, ‘Engaging Fangyuan and Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability for Changhua’s Twin Towns’ in 2020–2022 and ‘24-, 33-, and 120-hour courses for certification of environmental education personnel’ and the Science Education Centre’s ‘Teachers’ Outdoor Ecological and Fishery Teaching Enhancement Event: Research and Study Activities in the Budai Coastal Wetland Ecological Park’. They will be discussed in detail below:
1. Fangyuan Reengineering USR Seed Programme and Sprouting Programme for Engaging Fangyuan and Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability for Changhua’s Twin Towns in 2020–2022:
This includes the following research projects: In collaboration with Changhua Aquaculture Association, we will screen the heat-resistant and beneficial bacteria Bdellovibrionaceae in Taiwan’s coastal areas, and screen the common vibrio, including Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus, which can control and inhibit the most common human and marine organisms and aquaculture in Taiwan’s coastal areas.
April 2021: Bdellovibrionaceae were collected in field water for heat-resistant strain screening. Six people participated in the activity. |

The event was organised because Budai wetlands in Chiayi County are important bird habitats with many aquaculture businesses. The event shifted the focus of the 2019 curriculum quality-oriented education from science education to ecological education. Moreover, the lecturer presented the biological diversity of birds and demonstrated practices in outdoor teaching. Participants at the event also visited local businesses operated under the novel business model of ‘non-toxic aquaculture’.
Introduction and outdoor lectures presented by Chairman Qiu Jingyao, winner of the Shennong Prize,
and Professor Chen Dezhi of Providence University.
Professors Yiji Kan, Chung-yi Lin and Su-zhen Yang from the Department of Biology of NCUE led the outdoor teaching activities for pre-service teachers.
