SDG14.2.3 Overfishing (community outreach)-2021
NCUE offered local community residents and students courses related to coastal biological resources, fishing operations, and fisheries conservation, including the ‘Fangyuan Reengineering USR Seed Programme’ and the ‘Programme for Engaging Fangyuan and Dacheng: Industrial and Environmental Sustainability for Changhua’s Twin Towns in 2020–2022’ implemented by the Environmental Education Centre.
1. The course offered under the programme is the ‘Coastal Biological Resources’, a course also offered by the Department of Biology of the College of Science last semester. It targets both NCUE’s students and community members as well as aquatic and fishery business owners, and is designed to raise awareness of overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and destructive fishing practices.
The lesson plan is as follows:
Weeks 1–8: Introduction of various coastal organisms and ecological resources, as well as related experimental classes and product experience.
Weeks 9–11: Introduction, experience, feedback and discussion on ecological tourism and oyster farming in Changhua Wanggong Wetland.
Week 12: Environmentally-friendly farming replaces harvesting of natural fish resources.
Week 13: Specimen preparation with crystal drops for coastal biological resource specimen preservation.
Week 14: Introducing the Endangered Taiwan White dolphin off the west coast of Taiwan.
Week 15: An introduction to coastal pollution and improper fishing practices.
Weeks 16-17: Research and data collection on coastal environment and industries in Changhua.
Weeks 18: Report, feedback, and sharing of data on coastal environment and industries in Changhua.
4/11/2020, Mr Lin Huangcai, Director General of Wang Gong Tourism Development Association, demonstrated the tour guide’s role to teachers and students. There were 39 participants in the event, experiencing Wang Gong marine tourism resources in Fangyuan Township and they practised tour-guiding skills.
2. Chen Zhiyong, a lecturer from the Ching Kuo Institute of Management and Health, was invited to deliver a lecture on preparation of diaphonised specimens of fishery resources, including fish, shellfish, and shrimps. The skills can be applied to the conservation, identification, tourism, and education related to marine life resources. A total of 42 people participated in the event.
