SDG 7.4.3 Energy efficiency services for industry

NCUE has long been committed to promoting smart energy applications, energy conservation, and carbon reduction technologies, including fields such as energy generation, energy conservation, energy storage, and system integration. In 2024, NCUE collaborated with government agencies in taking part in scientific research projects, providing carbon inventory services to local companies, guiding industrial transitions, and organizing seminars. NCUE also provided businesses with energy efficiency assessments, technical exchanges, and shared renewable energy research application results to promote industrial low-carbon transformation and energy sustainability.

1. Promotion of Energy Storage and Clean Energy Research Projects

NCUE conducted 26 energy storage and clean energy-related research projects in 2024, including 6 National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) projects with a total budget of NTD$6,888,000, and 20 non-NSTC projects with a budget of NTD$7,523,000 (Table 1).

2. Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Reduction Services

In alignment with global net-zero emission policies, NCUE provided 16 greenhouse gas inventory and reduction services to businesses in 2024 (with the project budget of NTD$3,380,000), involving 13 faculty members (Table 2), assisting industries in identifying carbon emission hotspots and proposing improvement solutions to support small-and-medium enterprises in enhancing energy efficiency.

3. Industrial Low-Carbon Technology Guidance and Application

NCUE's Innovation Incubation Center further provided consultation services for local businesses in 2024, assisting a total of 11 manufacturers in incorporating low-carbon and energy-saving technologies, summaries are as shown in Tables 3 and 4, with relevant photos and results in Figures 1-16.

(1) Energy-saving technology guidance: NCUE assisted businesses in incorporating energy-saving transformation and energy-saving technologies. The businesses include Leadtec Co., Ltd., Cheng Shin Rice Corp., Tanque Corp., Ten Sheng Assorted Houseware Co., Ltd., and Megus1989 International Corporation.

(2) Low-carbon management and carbon inventory: NCUE assisted enterprises in adopting carbon emission source review, greenhouse gas inventory report writing, hotspot identification, and carbon emission calculation. The businesses include Derlian Biotech Corp., Yu Taih Co., Ltd., Jackson Cutting Board Co., Ltd., Chia Mao Precision Tools Co., Ltd., Chain We Machinery Co., Ltd., and Echaintool Precision Co., Ltd.

NCUE not only provided these companies with technical support, but also made major progress in assisting manufacturers in gradually establishing comprehensive low-carbon management systems, as well as implementing industrial carbon reduction policies.

4. Industrial Technology Discussion and Exchange

(1) NCUE's College of Engineering and College of Technology have long been dedicated to advancing smart energy applications, covering areas such as energy creation, energy conservation, energy storage, and system integration. Baoshan Campus serves as Taiwan’s only smart microgrid demonstration site, functioning as the core platform for continued collaboration among industry, government, academia, and research institutions. In 2024, the "Smart Grid and Electrical Energy" faculty professional community organized 2 free technical symposiums and exchange events (Table 5), providing direct services and facilitating knowledge transfer in industrial energy efficiency and renewable energy applications. Related photos are shown in Figures 17-18.

(a) In October 2024, the symposium "Microgrid Technology Development Trends and Distributed Microgrid Case Studies" was held, featuring CEO Ting-kuan Lee from Taiwan Microgrid Technology Co., Ltd., who offered an in-depth exploration of microgrid operation mechanisms, technological developments, and emerging trends in renewable integration, energy storage, and intelligent control. The symposium also shared multiple domestic and international case studies to assist industry in mastering energy management strategies and planning methods under different scenarios.

(b) In November 2024, the special lecture "Distributed Grids and Long-Duration Energy Storage Systems" was presented by General Manager Ching-wen Tzeng from EVERDURA Technology Co., Ltd., introducing the application potential of vanadium redox flow batteries in distributed grids. The lectured examined their key roles in long-duration energy storage, system resilience, and stable power supply, supported by practical case analyses of microgrid operations in different regions.

(c) These activities not only strengthened technical exchange between industry and academia but also provided local enterprises with practical solutions for improving energy efficiency and adopting clean energy technologies. Together, they have deepened the application and implementation of renewable energy technologies in various industrial settings, laying a solid foundation for advancingregional energy transition and sustainable development.

(2) NCUE's Department of Electrical Engineering organized the 2024 Summer Electromagnetic Education Leadership Symposium from August 5 to August 9, 2024, for five consecutive days, with a total of 64 participants. Each day featured 6 hours of training courses, covering topics such asadio frequency energy harvesting and application design of low-temperature RF signal generators, an introduction to monolithic microwave/millimeter-wave integrated circuits and related applications, and principles and design of transmission lines. The symposium aimed to assist industry and academia in mastering advanced technologies in energy and communication applications. Related activity photos are shown in Figures 19-20.

5. Assisting the Government in Promoting Industrial Low-Carbon Transformation

In cooperation with the Industrial Development Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs under the "Green Gold Industry Shining Value-Added Program," NCUE hosted the "Industrial Low-Carbon Transformation Talk — Green Gold Industry Forum" on August 7, 2024, at the College of Engineering, Baoshan Campus (Figure 21). The forum invited officials from the Industrial Development Administration and project office representatives to explain new supply chain connection models and policy resources to metal industry manufacturers, with highlight case companies sharing their experiences. NCUE presented topics on digital and net-zero transformation, showcasing the school team's capabilities to help industry understand and replicate successful cases, promoting new opportunities for metal industry players to enter digitalization and green production management. Through research projects, carbon inventory services, industrial consultation, professional symposiums, and technical training, NCUE has provided comprehensive energy efficiency and clean energy technology support for local industries. These efforts have not only enhanced industrial capabilities in energy conservation and carbon reduction but also facilitated the practical application of renewable energy technologies in industrial settings, continuously advancing regional energy transition and sustainable development.
