SDG 14.3.3 Maintain ecosystems and their biodiversity (direct work)
NCUE has held several planned activities to maintain and expand existing plant and animal ecosystems and their biodiversity, especially threatened ecosystems. NCUE includes the Environmental Education Centre’s “Beautiful and Treasured Clams in Fangyuan and Dacheng: Sustainable Industry and Environment Project of Changhua’s Two Cities Amid Climate Change” and ‘24-hour, 33-hour, and 100-hour courses for certification of environmental education personnel’; Department of Fine Arts ”Ecological Homelands and Urban-Rural Sustainability: A Changhua Ecological Art Project”. They will be discussed in detail below:
1. Beautiful and Treasured Clams in Fangyuan and Dacheng: Sustainable Industry and Environment Project of Changhua’s Two Cities Amid Climate Change:
The research project involves collaboration with the Changhua Aquaculture Association to screen heat-tolerant beneficial bacteria (Bacillus strains) from Taiwan’s coastal regions. These bacteria are selected for their potential to control and inhibit harmful microorganisms, thereby enhancing the health and quality of aquatic products such as fish, shrimp, and shellfish. Currently, four bacterial strains have been selected for genetic sequencing. The next steps include antibiotic screening, improving nitrifying bacteria for the degradation of harmful substances in water, and testing for the health and growth rate of shellfish.
Figure 1. The four heat-tolerant bacteria selected through PCR screening have been sent for qualitative sequencing. The gene sequences suggest that the strains may be the Bacillus strains required for the project

2. 24-Hour, 33-Hour, and 100-Hour Courses for Environmental Education Personnel Certification
The Environmental Education Center (EEC) nurtures relevant environmental education talents. In conjunction with the project “Beautiful and Treasured Clams in Fangyuan and Dacheng: Sustainable Industry and Environment Project of Changhua’s Two Cities Amid Climate Change”, EEC provided relevant education courses for the local and nationwide communities from July to October 2023, with the details shown in Table 1 and the activities shown in Figure 2-4:

3. Ecological Homelands and Urban-Rural Sustainability: A Changhua Ecological Art Project
Changhua City Xiangshan Trail Eastern Park Ecological Tour Series Events: ‘Siangshan Trail Eastern Park’ Ecological Mini-Tours.
In collaboration with Siangshan Village, three "Ecological Tour Training Workshops" will be organized. These workshops will include both static ecological explanations of Siangshan and on-site tour guide training. The goal is to promote ecological mini-tours at the Siangshan Ecological Art Park, training 48 seed tour guides and serving 78 local residents. This partnership with Siangshan Village aims to become a community practice partner in the local ecological sustainability system.
Additionally, students will be guided on an "Ecological Mini-Tour" at the partnered site, "Siangshan Trail Eastern Park." This excursion will complement classroom learning on botany by providing students with real-life observation opportunities and expanding teaching methods through ecological tours. (Figure 5)
