SDG 14.3.1 Conservation and sustainable utilization of the oceans (events)
NCUE has at least four programmes to promote conservation and sustainable utilisation of the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and marine resources. They include the Environmental Education Centre’s “Beautiful and Treasured Clams in Fangyuan and Dacheng: Sustainable Industry and Environment Project of Changhua’s Two Cities Amid Climate Change”; the Center for General Education’s “Marine Culture and Taiwan” and “Introduction to Marine Life Sciences”; Department of Geography’s “Nurturing Talent Through Maritime Education”, as shown in Table 1. They are discussed in detail below:

1. Beautiful and Treasured Clams in Fangyuan and Dacheng: Sustainable Industry and Environment Project of Changhua’s Two Cities Amid Climate Change:
(1) In collaboration with the Changhua County Marine Food Research Production Cooperative and its Marine Food Research Base, we regularly organize training courses and educational programs related to fish consumption education, fish culture, and marine conservation. The program is currently running smoothly and continuously, not only educating local residents but also training seed teachers from various regions. This initiative aims to promote the sustainability of marine ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity. Activities are shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1: 2023/03 In collaboration with the Changhua County Marine Food Research Base, we organize educational promotion courses on marine conservation and fish consumption. These programs aim to promote sustainable marine ecosystems and conserve biodiversity
2. The course "Sustainable Development and Practices of Coastal Biological Resources" is offered by the Department of Biology in the College of Science. It includes: A workshop on "The Application of Beneficial Bacteria in Aquaculture", A module on "Aquaculture and Greenhouse Gases" and A citizen science survey activity of important coastal wetlands. Participants include course instructors, students, local aquacultural industry, citizens, and organizations. The survey focuses on the ecology and resources of economically important shellfish species along the Changhua coast, aiming to jointly maintain the health and sustainability of local aquatic ecosystems.
Figure 2. 2023/03 The course includes workshops where students, faculty, and aquaculture professionals learn together, focusing on promoting the use of beneficial bacteria to maintain good water quality and enhance the quality of aquatic products
Figure 3. 2023/04The course on "Aquaculture and Greenhouse Gases" is designed to educate students, faculty, local aquaculture professionals, and community groups. It promotes environmentally friendly production strategies and aims to collectively maintain the health and sustainability of local aquatic ecosystems
Figure 4. 2023/05 "Sustainable Development and Practices of Coastal Biological Resources" will organize a citizen survey involving students and faculty from our course, as well as local residents and organizations. The survey will focus on the ecology and resources of important economically significant bivalves along the Changhua coast

2. Center of General Education
The Center for General Education offered one class on “Marine Culture and Taiwan” and one class on “Introduction to Marine Life Sciences” in 2023, and the related links are listed below:

For the course "Introduction to Marine Life Sciences", the curriculum activities and midterm and final assignments require feedback and sharing on marine conservation topics, including field investigations, experiences, service activities, and beach cleanups.

3. The Department of Geography’s “Nurturing Talent Through Maritime Education”
The beach cleanup event, co-organized by the Department of Geography and the Department of Public Affairs and Civic Education Student Associations at our school (as shown in the image), was held in collaboration with the village chief of Hanbao Village. The cleanup took place at Hanbao Wetland with 80 participants. This activity aimed to promote the concept of protecting Changhua’s beaches among the local community. By actively picking up trash from Hanbao Wetland, the students practiced environmental protection principles and enhanced their civic awareness. The event also fostered friendly interactions between students from both departments, achieving mutual benefits.
